Live migration from Intel to AMD (on KVM)

Virtualization.info has a very interesting article up about the progress AMD and RedHat have made in cross-platform live migration of a virtual machine. So far this was not possible because of the differences in instruction sets between AMD and Intel. Although it is not a clearcut statement it seems that two-way migration between AMD and Intel is supported. The main focus for AMD however is the fact that you can now seamlessly replace your Intel based servers for AMD Opteron based servers. The virtualization.info post is here: http://www.virtualization.info/2008/11/amd-live-migrates-kvm-virtual-machines.html.

There is an interesting link in the comments of the post that shows that an AMD to Intel migration was done in August. For more background on that story, go to Henning Sprang’s website: http://lazyb0y.blogspot.com/2008/08/report-from-virtualization-workshop-at.html.
